Audiences
CW unit 1 audiences
mainstream vs Niche
mainstream: Aimed towards a mass market the majority of people targeted at a broad way of interests. mainstream apples to lots of different audiences.
Example:
Doctor who
Game of Thrones
Superhero movies
Niche: aimed towards a narrow demographic. Narrowcasting aiming programmes at specific and specialist audience as opposed to broadcasting to mass audinces. youtube would do this as well as Twitch streaming as they would know what the person likes and watches it.
Examples :
Anime
Liverpool TV
Sky Arts
I think that as there is more accessible in the market at the moment than 20 years ago that media products are becoming more mainstream as people will be able to see what is popular.
Chris Anderson: the longTail Theory:
At the head of the demand curve and towards a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one size fit all containers.
BARB data
Stands for Broadcasters' audience research board.
Barb shows that ITV is bringing in about 6.5 million people to watch X Factor on a Saturday backing up the long tail idea that things are becoming more niche as it is going into the tail. Compared to nine years ago they have 19.5 million watching it.
The figures are there to check their previous views to see if they are doing well or if they are. It also shows how their creative ideas are working for the show.
The less that are watching the show the fewer people are watching the adverts so ITV doesn't get the revenue from them.

Psychographics
Profiling of audience based on personal beliefs, values, interests and lifestyle
This diagram shows the average weekly people watching shows. this shows that men are watching less tv then women as the women percentage is just above. This is because there would be more housewives then a house husband.
The adults from 16 - 24 don't watch a lot of shows this could be because that they are young adults more likely to go out or be at Uni or even not able to afford any TV to watch anything on.
Adults at the ages of 65+ watch the most TV. this is because they are retired and don't have anything to do so they would watch TV for the most of the day.
